The Swedish Chemicals Agency (Kemi) has published a report on the effect of the national ban on mercury that came into effect 1 June 2009. The report assesses mercury-free alternatives used, or that are expected to be used, while the survey did not cover exemptions to the ban.
The overall conclusion is that:
● For most applications it has been possible to introduce adequate mercury-free alternatives
and the transition generally took place before the general ban came into force.
● In some applications where exemptions still apply, mercury has also been replaced with
mercury-free technology.
● Kemi says the clear Swedish policy to phase out all mercury use is probably a contributing
factor to the development of alternatives in such a short time.
