The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced an allowable level for the chemical di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) to its bottled water quality standard regulations.
Bottled water manufacturers will now be required to monitor their products and source water for DEHP annually, under the current good manufacturing practice regulations for bottled water.
The introduction of this rule brings the regulations for bottled water into line with those for public drinking water, set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The regulation will enter into force on 16 April 2012.
