The European Food Safety Authority has published details of the new legislation concerning plastics used in food contact materials, commonly referred to as the Plastics Implementing Measure.
The designated EFSA webpage now includes details of the materials covered by the PIM, and the new rules
outlined in the legislation. These are:
1. List of authorised monomers and additives for use in plastics manufacture;
2. Restrictions and specification for authorised substances including specific migration limits;
3. Rules on non-intentionally added substances such as impurities and reaction products;
4. Overall migration limits;
5. Rules on compliance especially migration testing, listing simulants and testing conditions;
6. The concept of functional barrier;
7. Authorisation for nano-materials before use;
8. Declaration of compliance and supporting documentation.
The EFSA has also details of the impact of implementation of the PIM on previous legislation.
