Recently, some companies have developed one kind of functional garment to protect users from mosquito and other insects. For example, Columbia Sportswear Company has produced this kind of garment containing permethrin to protect user from insect.
In April, USA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rejected to import one batch of functional garments with pesticide belong to Columbia Sportswear Company because EPA found that there were no sufficient information related to pesticide on the labeling of this batch garment. For violation against pesticide regulation, Columbia Sportswear Company has been fined $22,880.
According to EPA’s report, all articles with pesticide shall have a label meeting requirements under federal labeling requirements and get EPA’s authorization before coming into USA market. Information on the label shall include pesticide registration number, appropriate component statement, storage and treatment statement. Otherwise, statement of “It is illegal to use this product without following the guidance of this labeling” should be included too.
In USA, an article containing pesticide, such as garments, mosquito net, etc., is to be supervised under the scope of pesticide. In the event of trading this kind of functional articles, manufacturers and merchants should well know relevant pesticide regulation in USA as well as the federal labeling requirements on this part to avoid violation against these regulations.
