EU has built up a specific mechanism to notify products violating relevant regulations and standards for the sake of consumers. The notification for non-food consumer products is called RAPEX. According to the 30th week notification, two batches of China jewelry have been notified for violating the cadmium entry under REACH regulation. Detail information is showed below:
1. Finland rejected to import a batch of earrings containing 18% of cadmium.
2. Austria requires a batch of necklace to be withdrawn from the market for the name plate of the necklace containing 33% of cadmium and carabiner clasp contains nickel and lead.
In the light of REACH Annex XVII Entry 23 “Cadmium and its compounds”, articles shall not be used or placed on the market if the concentration exceeds 0.01% by weight of the metal in (1) metal beads and other metal components for jewelry making; (2) metal part of jewelry and imitation jewelry articles and hair accessories.
