The Netherland has notified ECHA of intending to submit a restriction proposal on 1-methy-2-pyrrolidone (NMP, CAS No872-50-4) by 13 April 2013. According to Dutch’s saying, NMP is used in numerous industrial applications and products, such as being used to dissolve a wide range of chemicals, also being used as a solvent for surface treatment of textiles, resins and metal coated plastics or as a paint stripper. The Dutch government’s main concern is its use in coatings and cleaners for consumers and professionals, and the exposures of it may lead to unacceptable risks. And they said that restriction is the most appropriate risk management option because authorisation would less proportional and practical.
By the same date, Sweden, too, has notified ECHA of its intention to propose a harmonized classification and labeling on NMP with following classification: skin corrosion/irritation; serious eye damage/eye irritation; reproductive toxicity; STOT-SE; and aspiration hazard. Harmonized classification and labeling requirements are mandatory.
